Bangalley Screen, Bangalley Headland House

2019 - 2022

Exposed to the elements perched high on Bangalley headland, the Bangalley House finds its refuge amongst the surrounding rocks and windswept cliff clawing acacia and banksia trees. Gnarled twisted branches and overhanging pine fronds find their rhythm according to the prevailing weather patterns. Within the house, a floating concrete stair forms a spine throughout the interior connecting three levels of open living spaces. In need of encasing both sides of the stair, a series of solid brass rods bent consistently at irregular intervals was designed to form a sculptural art piece integrated as a feature within the house. The screen attempts to capture the notion of wind on the surface of the ocean and how the wind sculpts the landscape. Instilling a constant play of concealing and revealing while moving between levels, the surrounding long distant ocean and headland views are exposed as a collection of rippled glimpses between shimmering brass rods.
