Concertina Screen, Castlecrag House

by Caroline Casey

2018

As part of a major architecture renovation to a pre-existing large family home in Castlecrag the Concertina Screen was commissioned as an art installation to disguise the stair case and enliven the large central open-plan living spaces. Seamlessly set in-line with a solid teak lined entry wall, the floor to ceiling brass screen resonates as a large scaled piece of fine jewellery. An accordion succession of floor to ceiling thick brass blades extend across the face of the staircase revealing hidden patterns within. Both enlivening the space and transforming a static stair to a kinetic sculpture by the constant circulation throughout the house. As with many of Caroline’s installation works the Concertina Screen has strong links to her textile background as pattern, repetition and rhythm form key components in this art work.
